    88 e30 M20 excessive alternator ripple.

Was wondering if anyone else has has this problem. I checked my battery and alternator and battery tested bad, and alternator tested good but had a 70mv ripple. I replaced both and I still get the same test results with new parts. Ac Delco battery and Remy alt. What could be causing the excessive ripple?

From what I've read anything less than 500mV is OK. 70mV is less than 0.6%.

Seems really excessive compared to newer cars. I'll have to check it against my other e30 one day

70mv at idle doesn't seem particularly high to me. Peak- to- peak, or RMS?
It just depends on how many poles swing by how many loops in the field coil how fast...
and a whole bunch of physics in the metals...

If it did it with just one alt, I'd say check for a dead diode/coil/etc in the field.
But a sample of 2 is pretty conclusive.
