    Noob 318i trans questions

Pretty sure I may have accidentally posted this in the wrong place earlier, so reposting in here (Sorry Mods)

I'm sure this question has been asked/answered somewhere, but I'm new to E30's and clearly this forum, so I haven't found it.. lol

Anyhow, I just got my '84 318i from up north. Its been sitting for about a year and a half, so my step father looked at it for me before I flew up to drive it down and replaced the clutch master and slave cylinders. On the drive down however, the bleed valve on the slave was either not tightened well enough or vibrated loose and caused pressure loss. So I stopped and bled the line again and retightened the valve and got back underway. About an hour later, after stopping for fuel, the trans wouldn't shift into 2nd or 3rd gear (and would pop out in the event it did get into gear). So clearly something went wrong, but I want to get her back on the road ASAP, so considering just replacing the trans altogether and putting the current one on the bench.. SO...

Question: What transmissions will bolt up to the 4cyl in the 318 and which cars do they come out of?

    Any help is appreciated :D

any S14, S38, M30, or M10 transmission will "bolt up," but you might need to change driveshafts, depending on what transmission you use. Slave styles can differ as well

If you are looking just for a drop-in, simple replacement, the 84-85 e30 318 transmissions will work(as I'm sure you're aware), as well as 83 320i E21s. You are looking for the Getrag 240 with the M10 (not M42) bell housing.

Check out this thread and the M10 sub-forum:

If it shifted fine before the fluid leak you may just still have air in the line and it's not going completely in to gear. They can be tricky to bleed so I'd make damn sure it's fully bled before I started even thinking about swapping gear boxes

I have an M10 too. The bleeder screw is facing downwards and some air gets trapped on the top of the slave cylinder. Those clutch hoses break over time cause that angle. ECS has a steel braided clutch line.
