Bumping this to say that I'm almost 95% sure it's due to problems with the differential's backlash setting. Does anyone know how to adjust a small case 4.10 LSD?
My clunking/popping noise was caused by BOTH inner CV joint binding/popping on the rebuilt GKN axles. I swapped them out and the noise is gone. Jack up the rear end, turn the wheels by hand and check.
