Using later style evaporator temp sensor/regulator in early car?

Is it possible to fit the later style evaporator temperature sensor/regulator in an earlier car? My car is an 86 bmw 325es, the older style seems to break easily. This is what I have now:

I broke mine when reinstalling the evaporator today!

I can't get the links to work. But I bypassed mine as it would randomly open and close. I get low 50 degree vent temps so I'm not worried about it freezing.

That make sense, my a/c will probably never get to the freezing point anyways!

That's sensor is set to 37 degrees. I wish my AC got cold enough to trigger it
