What model e30 do you have? What condition are the engine and suspension in?
Have you taken it to a track yet? Start by fixing any problems then take it to the track. From there decide if you want more power, better brakes, or a better suspenion.
I've seen a lot of guys waste a lot of money on mods then upgrading a few months latter.
With the m50 motor in my car I have too much power and not enough handling and braking. I would start there then do the motor swap.
I don't get into the M50 vs S50 debate. It all depends on how much you want to spend because that isultimatly the deciding factor.
i didn't relaly mean pointless, and it's only my 2nd post because i dont really post on this site, mainly e30tech and bmw-forums, i usually just read posts here. and no, not ignorant, just misinformed. I've had a lot of people inform me with good points as to why you should do an m50 swap over an s50, probably because someone has said

You can build a M50 to S50 spec,
Do not post things you do not know and cannot comprehend.
After driving a E36 & E30 M3, I got the power bug. Pete and I discussed different engine
builds and I chose a M50 due to its twin cam, chain timing belt, power potential. I ended up having
Pete build the M50 to M3 spec.
In hind sight, a used M3 engine out of the Roundel might have been cheaper, but I got a customized
engine so I can't complain.
he's not that misinformed, we all know that a vanos m50 with m3 cams, chip, exhaust, intake (other basic bolt ons) will make s50 type numbers for less money. However we are talking a modified engine vs a stock engine. Its all about potential, and in that comparison we haven't even tapped into the s50's potential. Its all about how far you want to go.
my vote goes to m52 aluminum, while you are shelling out money why not build an engine like stu's dads engine. 2.9 or 3.1 and very very light.
