    Engine/Tranny noise

Ok. Over the past two weeks I've noticed a noise develop in my car.

Whenever I'm not in gear, it sounds like someone is popping popcorn in a microwave deep in my engine. My roommate says it sounds like a dwarf is walking around with a plastic bucket stuck on their foot somewhere in my car. The sound is really quiet and I cannot hear it if I have a window open or any music on. I've opened up the hood and stuck my head under the car and around the engine bay, and it's not any louder than it is in the cabin. When I feel my strut bar or any part of the car, I feel a slight vibration at the same time I hear the noise. The noise only occurs at low rpms. When it idles at 660, it's sporadic. Sometimes its constantly going, sometimes I hear only a few kernels of popcorn pop. The noise has become more consistent over the past two weeks. I could only hear the noise sometimes. Now it makes the noise all the time to a slight degree.

When I am sitting with the clutch in, or the clutch out and the transmission in neutral, and I increase the rpms to 1000, the noise goes away dramatically. By 1200-1500 rpms, I cannot hear it at all. Above that range, the engine is too loud to discern the sound anyway. I've tried driving in first gear very slowly so that the rpms are below 1000 rpm. In that case, I could not hear the noise.

I get the impression its in the engine or tranny, but I'm not sure. For all I know it could be some random thing vibrating on my car.

Additionally, my car is low on oil, but still above the minimum oil marking on the dipstick. I don't know if this could be because of poor lubrication.

    So...any ideas r3v?

I'd have to guess a loose exhaust heat sheld. Also fill up your oil.

if it goes away when the clutch is down, then it's normal, i forget what that noise is called.. synchro rattle or something... Very common with lightweight flywheels... Altho, if it's really loud, you're probably low on gear oil or something like that.

I think your refering to the "lay shaft bearing".

it's probably your tranny. it's a common thing with the getrag260. mine is even louder because of the lightened flywheel.

although sometimes it's your throwout bearing. how many miles since your clutch was last replaced?

The car is relatively new to me, so I have no idea. The clutch still works fine? Should I be worried about this if it is the clutch?
