    custom intake manifold

I was just wondering, is it possible to fabricate a custom intake mani (with fatter shorter runners) and make it a 'log-type' a la 750i intake, and attach a MAF to it to get more power out of my cammed stroker?

How much science is involved in optimizing the manifold? Or can I just wing it and see?

Any sort of advice is welcome.

Airflow is fairly in-depth. Some research and knowledge will point you in the right direction, but if it was that easy I think one of the aftermarket companies would have created something by now. I believe our manifolds do restrict the motor a lot, mainly the last few inches where wierd angles occur. But, we have good low end torque without losing too much top end, which is what BMW was aiming for. With airflow, everything is a compromise. You may be able to create a manifold that works better with your cam, but I think you'll lose some power down low, and it wouldn't be worth all of the moeny and time invested. You can't just strap a log style manifold on, air pressure waves have a huge effect on efficiency of an intake design.
