Anyone done it? Is it as hard as i've heard? What all do you need? Do you have to worry about the ecu?

Now that depends on your skill level now doesn't it? I myself wouldn't have any trouble at all with the entire swap, it would be "routine" if anything

Pilot bearing, flywheel, clutch, throwout bearing, pressure plate, release arm, pivot pin, transmission, slave cylinder, master cylinder, pedal box, shift linkage, shift console, shift lever, leather boot, some minor wiring. These are the major items.

Realisticly? No. But it is a good idea to get a ECU from a manual car.

ECU's are the same, you just need to do a little wiring to bypass the PARK/NEUTRAL Switch so that you can start the car, that takes a few min..

The ECU's are not the same.

The automatic one should have a lower set idle. Or maybe it is the other way around. Either way, there are some small differences, nothing to stop you from keeping the auto ECU with the 5spd conversion, but just the same...

There used to be a solid write up at fatdaddybmw.com but the site is down now. Someone said it will be back up again next month. I dunno. Either way, I'm doing it this summer definitely and I'll make some sort of write up with pictures as I go.

If they didn't change the ECU number between automatic and manual transmission version cars, then it shouldnt' matter in an automatic to manual swap with respect to the ECU, just keep the same ECU (unless changing over from 1.1 to 1.3 or somethign like that)

                        correct?
