I don't know if it's possible on the M42, but on my M20 I drilled a hole in the "hollow bolt" that holds the oil cooler adapter onto the block. I then tapped a hole for the (electric) pressure sender I got from bavauto with my gauges. the dummy light sensor is hooked up normally and doesn't interfere with this setup.
I don't know if the sender on an M42 has the same size & thread as that used on the M20 engines. If it does you can get a fairly inexpensive adapter ($37) from BavAuto that allows the use of standard 1/8NPT senders. And VDO offers a sender that includes the pressure sensor and low pressure switch. That allows you to have both the gage and idiot light. The widest selection I've seen is from http://www.egauges.com/
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
