What would cause a heater to not blow hot?

The car is a 90 325i - the heater blows warm when stopped and cold as can be when the car is moving. I'm assuming the heater valve is stuck closed? I can hear a flap close or something when i turn the heat knob - so im assuming that's not it. Any ideas?

I'd start with a t-stat. Sounds like it's stuck open.

I guess that would explain the car running under the half way mark all the time. I'll swap it out.

did you mess with the hoses going to the heater core? After my swap, I flipped the hoses to the core and didn't get nearly as much heat as I wanted.

I would guess the t-stat as well. I had to drive without mine for a while as to not overheat.

what about the recall thing that goes inline between the engine block and the heater core? that is supposed to close so the heater core does not blow up if the car overheats

Just before the heater core is a small valve. Ball style, it does a great job closing water flow to the heater core. It is electrically controllled, and closes when the A/C is on.

It is intended to make the coolant circulate only through the block when the A/C is on, which explains the odd block bypass circulation hoses under the throttle body.

Mine stuck shut, making no heat. I was too broke to replace it, so I drilled it out. Bad idea, BTW. Cheap but shitty!

How hard is it to get to if the t stat doesnt help?

I'm looking at this - those are 2 different heater assemblies. Which is most likely on my car? I guess i can worry about it when the tstat doesn't work.
