So, i failed emissions pretty badly........

hydrocarbons were a very small amount over what they needed to be - same with low speed nox. high speed nox was double where it should be. Cat looks to be pretty new. I'm going to try new plugs and an air filter and some of that no fail stuff. Any other suggestions?

Was the car hot? I drive my e34 around in low gear to get those cats hot and then right into the testing bay. I read something about adding alcohol or ethanol into the gas, you might want to do a google search or see if anyones actually done it.

high hc with high nox ends up being either a bad cat, or a cat not warmed up enough.

Oh, and if you have an aftermarket cat that looks "new" those things are crap.

High HC & NOX can be as a result of a rich running engine that causes the catalytic converters to run too hot. The first thing I'd do would be to attack the rich mixture problem. A part of that would be a general tune up (new plugs, air filter, valve adjustment) and a through check for intake leaks. If original, I'd also replace the ignition wires, distributor cap, rotor and O2 sensor. And make sure that the engine is running at normal temp. A bad thermostat can cause the engine to run rich. As can a bad temp sensor input to the DME.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

the engine at the time was running too cool. it also sat for half an hour before they ran the test.

Leave it idling during your wait, and make sure the engine is at normal operating temp, You'll pass. ;)

Both of those are problems. Get it running at the right temp and make sure it doesn't sit before the test. Some of that guaranteed to pass stuff from any auto parts store couldn't hurt either...
