its a 50/50 by the book, I have had this problem of like 2wks and couldn't solve, thats why I brought it here, I'm sure my a/c belt could be tighter but I never use it, Have monitored the fans and the fan clutch works good, the aux. fan will not kick on unless I put the a/c on. if there is a sensor that should kick the aux. fan on where is it?

that doesnt sound like a blocked coolant problem, it would overheat within 5 minutes if it was a complete blockage by an air bubble of something (happened in my familys 7 when I changed the radiator hoses). Which thermostat did you put in? There are 3 that you can run in m20's, and if you picked the wrong one it will take a lot for the thermostat to kick in (higher engine temps).
Check if the thermostat is not damaged, not put in backwards, and see if the thermostat actually opens by boiling some water and seeing if it opens when you put it in the boiling water.

On my '89 "i" engines, the temp sensor that kicks the aux. fan on is on the passenger side of the radiator, near the top (sticks out the side). The wires run down to the Bosch resistor, then to the fan motor.
There's a procedure where you can "short" the wires to be sure the fan works right (mine is the two speed version).
