There are 2 brass nuts on each side of the back of your cluster. They are notorious for vibrating loose and causing the temp and fuel guages to act funny.

Remove your cluster, tighten the nuts, and all will be well.

Just finished fixing this very same problem this weekend. My fuel guage nut had come completely off so I had to replace it. Ever since it's worked like a dream.

Hello- There is a circuit board in your Motometer. The SI board. It has rechargeable batteries in it
BMW says replacement of the board is part of maintanance. They are about $140. You can buy batteries from Radio Shack for four bucks and solder them in yourself.
I ran wires from the board to the glove box with a battery holder. When they go bad, I just open the glove box ,replace the batteries and all my gauges work again. There should be a write up about this. That's how I found out-Steve

unfortunately i didnt get a chance to take out my dash over spring break because i was busy replacing my wiper motor, man that was a pain in the ass.

Although all clues seem to point to the nuts in the back of the guage cluster being loose. I will tackle this problem later. Luckily the empty light still comes on :)
