    Power Steering Rack?

I am curious if these normally go out on our cars after a certain amount of wear n tear.

Wich of course im sure they do but does anyone know like what number of mileage they start to take a downfall.

I ask this as i have a spare one and cant decide wether i should pull it and hold onto it or just let it go with the car when it goes to the junkyard.

Whats the value of a steering rack?

My car has about 210k miles on it and so does the steering rack and my spare one has about 180k.

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, I am just curious thats all.

    TIA

My car has about 166xxx miles on it. All the steering components are stock.
My steering rack has some play now that I replaced all front suspension and new tie rods.
So I guess its all based on driver style?

The rack & pinion in my 318 was bad (170k), put one in from a parts car (miles.. who knows?) and that unit was ALSO bad.

I got a used one from bmwwholesale for.. either 150 or 200? I don't remember now.

they tend to spring a leak after a while. I'm not sure what would cause them to go bad, maybe running it out of fluid and getting it hot? or maybe super dirty fluid? or just a lot of miles..

mine used to leak a bit when I got the car, then I switched to valvoline maxlife ATF and no more leaky steering. valvoline also helps my transmission shift better.. :)

Mine pissed itself, like Diego's. It only had 111k on it so questionable. So I am replacing it with a manual rack to eliveate the problem source.

I like the sound of a manual rack out of what car, and while its out any chance in chaning the turn ratio?

It's an E30 rack. It has the equivilant of Power steering unit, just doesn't offer the light unattached feeling of a boosted unit.

Most E30's in EU have them. Sorry can't spit out the ratio of it though.

I love the feeling of an E30 power steering over japenese power steering. hehe

My rack and pinion went out around 155k, I replaced it with a remanufactured unit for $150. I think new they are a lot more expensive. Personally I would hang on to it if you plan to keep your e30 for a while.
