Noise from the wheel bearing or diff ?

That was the plan originally but a shop told me it's easier for them to do the rear bearings with the trailing arms on the car ....

I've put the car on four jacks, let the car idle in 3rd and I can't pin point where it's coming from. It seems to be louder from the passenger side though, and the noise stops quickly once I change from gear to neutral...

If it's the bearing(s) in the diff, is it a bitch work to do them or should I just look for a different diff ?

doesn't sound like its your bearing and in that case track down the fellow that sold you that diff. if you do your bearings it probably would be longer but if you took the whole trailing arm off and had the old bearings pressed out it probably would be easier. just depends when I did mine one came out no problem but the one that was really bad took 2 good hours of me hammering out from the back and my dad using a slide hammer from the other side. definitely not a DIY if you have neighbors that are sensitive to repetitive blows to metal or trying to study for finals.

bumping an old thread because I am to much of a noob to post a thread yet. While driving on the highway last week my diff output flange and combined axle came out the side of my diff. Its still hanging in there, but clearly isn't in all the way. Sounds awful. I have a 92 e30 vert with a 4.27 LSD. 700 dollars is out of my budget and I just want to fix it. My only daily driver. How do I put the flange back in. Thx.

Is your car excessively lowered or have alignment problems?

Was the differential extremely noisy before this pop our occured?

Pop it back in, then make sure all the bolts for the plate that holds the flange in are tight.

it has a sport suspension. The diff was perfect before it happened. I hit a curb in the snow I couldn't see pretty hard. Happened on highway home afterwards. Isn't there a lock ring and seal on them? Does it just push back in? You make it sound extremely easy.

If it's the diff, it will change a lot when you're hard on the throttle and
when you're hard OFF it. A 'whirr' is usually the diff.
And yes, they can make a 'bit' of noise for a LONG time, especially if you
use good fluid in them. I've noticed that Red Line tends to make them a
                bit noisier, oddly...

If it's a wheel bearing, get to somewhere you can take a long, 30 mph sweeper in
each direction, and one way will be a LOT louder than the other!

                  Yes, it's that easy.

If this is the case, it seems your problem is neither a wheel bearing or diff problem because if the car is still moving your wheels are still turning and so is the LSD. If either of those were bad you would still hear the noise.

I can't wait to pop it back in then. I got another car so I can stop driving it and give it the attention it needs. Thanks Todd.

2 cars = pro move. That's really the only way anything ever gets done with a project car.
