I'm test driving a 87 325is with a rebuilt engine in it. The car itself has 145k on it and the rebuilt engine has less that 40k on it. How long will the rebuild last me? Is it worth buying a car with that many miles on a rebuild?

40k is nothing; so long as they did the rebuild right. If it's a good job of it then the motor should last 200k+ miles if you're good with maintianing it.Adam Fogg- '88 M3

No, I'm saying people have driven the same engine with the same internal components that it had when it rolled off the showroom floor. To this day a lot of the engines here were never rebuilt.

i replaced everything on it but the head gasket. funny you should ask because i blew the head gasket about a week ago. i have the head off and everything and just noticed that it had been rebuilt before.
it ran perfect for about 40 thousand miles. i was very pleased with it. maybe if my thermostat didnt go out when it was 105 degress out then i would have blown the head gasket. oh well.
but if you treat it right and take care of it it should run just fine. check the compresion on it before you put it in your car.'91 318isComment

The seller or the garage most likely just put a rebuilt the head on the motor. Try to find out which machine shop did the rebuild and ask around about the shop's reputation for quality work.
Ask any seller to see service records. Don't believe anything he says if he doesn't have a record of it. Even if he rebuilt it in his back yard, any BMW owner worth a poop would keep the receipts for the parts, and probably have the old parts lying around too. Some sellers have no records of anything. For me, no records = no sale . . . unless it's silly cheap.Comment
