    fan clutch woes

my 87 325is was running very hot in traffic the other day and luckily I was able to trace it to the fan clutch since I could spin the fan with no resistance.

the new fan clutch came in on friday and all weekend I have been trying various methods to get the darn thing off. I tried every method that was suggested in a previous post and even fabbed up a 32mm wrench but to no avail.

any suggestions that might work? Im half tempted to take it to a shop but im not familiar with any reputable shops in the area.

it is reversed threaded. put your wrench on there, approximately upright, and give it a good wack with a hammer in the clockwise direction. a couple tries should pop it free.. you could also try soaking the threads in some penetrating oil if you have a rusty car.

alternatively there is a fan clutch holding tool, bavauto has it listed on their site. if you were able to make a wrench you can probably make this tool as well by looking at the picture on their site.

yea i might try to make something similar to the tool on bavauto. Hopefully it will give me enough leverage to break it loose. Thanks!

Listen to Nando. You are better off breaking it free with a baby sledge. A 10mm wrench with a pipe on the end holds it enough to break it free.

Get a 32mm bike wrench, not motorcycle, but a regular bike. They have them at most bike shops / sporting goods stores, I know the dick's sporting goods has them. It is very thin and has a rubber coated handle. They cost like $10 - $15. Then wack with hammer.
