    Lets talk about skidplates..

Lets talk about skidplates.. so i just reved another pan.. i have the 666 fabricaton plate. While the plate took some of the hit it still punctured , bent up and the pan died under it lol.. I run canyons and the 2 times ive destroyed the pan it wouldnt have mattered weather the car was low or stock height (so i dont need to hear it).. Anyways my questions are.. What are the rally guys running and do u have pics?
Has anyone modified a metal 5 series pan to fit there e30? thanks for the input.. ill post pics of the rev'd 666 fab pan and my latest oil pan :)

I'm not really a "rally guy", but I did install my 666 plate for the specific purpose of protecting my lowered e30 whenever I rallycross (only once so far). This is a little bit worrying. Can you describe what it is you ran over?

just buy two skidplates next time and double up for added protection, just like a condom.

            Hahaha , aliminum is metal . :p

If you mean the M20 powered E28's and E34's they use aluminum pans just like us .
The M20 E34 pan is the same exact pan as ours .

Maybe someone can see if the diesel Rangers and Lincolns used a steel pan .

As far as rally cars ..go HERE .
Click on pictures and then "2005" and check out the "Rallye Franconia" to get an eyefull .

haha.... if you have to double bag it you should just stay away or use nothing cause you're gonna get the clap no matter which way you look at it!

This thread is not meant to bash on the 666 plate.. what happened was my buddy was driving the car and came across some rocks (normal on the crest), The rock was the size of a small nerf football and penetrated the skidplate comepletely lol.. I believe the 666 fab skidplate saved me a tow but it gave its life doing it. I think the pan is designed for more street hazards ( speed bumps dips in the road etc ) and not hardcore driving on canyon roads.. way i see it i payed 190 bucks to not have my car towed and hell it might of even saved the motor.. all that aside i know now the 666 fab plate isnt gonna cut it. I do know that there is a metal "steel lol" m20 pan.. my buddy bought a eta outta 5 series and it came with a steel pan.. the sumps are a little different but it fit the bolt pattern of the block.. im thinking of taking that pan and clearancing the sump to work with the e30 cross member.. i have some ideas about a "real " skidplate as well but i dont wanna embarass myself with my ms paint skills but involves a cross bar under the core support tied into each frame horn.. it then would have two bars that would tie into the front subframe bolts (not sure on how this will work yet) The skidplate will also act as a lower stress bar not that forward of the strut towers needs it anyways. The front cross bar would be bolted to plates that would be welded to the frame horns making it removeable . the final tie in point would be the actual subframe itself.. im planning on welding a band across it with a nutset type of deal in the holes i drill in it.. fitting in this frame will be a steel skid plate :) im also thinking of having rubber between the plate and the pan so when something does hit it spreads the energy throughout the pan and just not on one spot .. Thanks for reading my long run on sentence.. im brainstorming as i type.. if u have anything to add feel free..

Oh yeah on a side note i can already hear some of your replys like isnt the rubber gonna make the engine feel like it has a solid mount? well i already have solid engine mounts :)
And " isnt this skidplate gonna weigh alot more than the 666 fab ? im gonna try to keep weight down on the plate but i know its gonna be at least twice as heavy as the 666 plate.. but in the end i will have the piece of mind that when i come around the corner committed that rocks arent gonna ruin my day or my car.. also the weight would be down low .. im sure it would weigh less than a subwoofer enclosure :):hitler:

I wasn't tryin to bash them, I'm just wondering how he guarantees them if at all.

How could he guarantee them? If you hit a big ass rock, it might punch through the aluminum if its big enough and you hit it hard enough. There are too many variables to guarantee them.

well i found this.. its a saab rallye car skidplate.. they made it this thing because a smaller lighter skidplate resulted in a dnf due to tarmac/oil pan love making.. very simalar to what i have in mind :) would anyone else be interested in a plate.. sometimes its always better making a couple while u do it :)

I didn't think they were designed for hitting big ass rocks at high speeds...more like protection over a speed bump or something.
