found cause to buzzing fuel pump.

for all of you who have a buzzing fuel pump. i found the cause, most people thought it was because of a fuel filter. its not. its the in-tank pump. when your in-tank pump gets old it doesnt pump as fast as the external pump causing the external pump to overwork itself and buzz. if you dont get a new in-tank pump soon you might burn out your external pump.
anways thats what i replaced on my E30 and the buzzing is gone. just hope i helped some of you out there with the same prob.

That's one of the very few things that can leave you stranded, glad you got it done before that happened!!

yeah, tell me about it. If your not sure how old your pump is, I would replace it and save the money wasted on a tow truck.

Hmm, I haven't actually done mine. Is there one or two on the 318is?

Only if you relocated your fuel pump(s) to your engine bay.

It comes from near the fuel tank.

To hear it just open your car door, its down by the rear drivers side wheel. Mines really loud, and people always notice that my car buzzes. Is access to the in-tank pump fairly easy? like as easy as under the black cover under the back seat?

If you hear a buzz when you open your hood, that's probably the ICV :)

Correct, most etas, like mine, have a non functional in-tank pump. The overworked main pump ends up cavitating. Half the time it is due to bad soldering connections on the in-tank pump. I have heard of people replacing it with an in tank pump from some American car...I think it was a Vega, or something strange sounding like that with minor modifications (much cheaper than the Bosch unit...but you get what you pay for). That's one of the things on my car I've been meaning to replace for several years now.
