I was told by my dad that is was normal, and that his 88 IS did it before too.
Time to let him know it's not. :D
'88 and newer cars dont have the double pump setup (except M3s). Late model cars just have one big ass in tank pump.
And FWIW, the old style transfer pumps always go out. I'd be suprised to hear of a single one on this site that is still working 100% like the main pump is. I dont even think mine works.

Hmm, none the less, better get this covered on the 87 then.
I'll have to disagree with you about the Vega pump. I've never seen one of the E30 VDO pumps last 100K miles...usually they are done by 80K. On the other hand, the Vega pump....I had a Vega with a Buick aluminum V8 from 1978 to 1994. I KNOW that pump had well over 200K miles on it when I sold the car, and it was still running. I still have a spare Vega pump from the junkyard that I never got a chance to use. It is all metal. The VDO pump is plastic. I took the one apart that was on my M3 (yes, M3's kept the 2-pump system until 1990). I found that one of the two brushes was gone. Not worn down, gone.
I'm getting a buzzing from under the car on the driver's side, near the rear wheel well. According to the info I've searched, it's either that fuel pump going bad, or the one in the tank. Is there a way to isolate which one it is so I can replace it?
i too can hear noise from the pump but not sure if its a buzzing. i can hear it in the cabin with the windows rolled up and the car at idle. the sound comes from under the rear seats.
Simple enough. Use the method here: http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/show...4&postcount=17 and get the pumps running with the engine off. Pull up the back seat and the access cover, and unplug the two prong connector. Any change in noise?
