well if someone decided to build a m42 turbo. what parts would he have to use? are there any manifolds out there?

With a SMT unit you would simply retard the igntion more per psi then usually,
maybe something like 1.6°/psi or even 2° to be sure
High compression engines have a lower charge air temp threshold then low compression engines,, but way better throttle response and at the end more potential
So at 6psi you would have 12deg retard, also a sufficient intercooler system would be necassaryGunni

Friend of mine was running 15psi on a small ass Toyta Mr2 turbine in his M42 with an additional injector, but the turbine was so small, the revs fell right on the face at 5k rpm.
Gunni i need you to help me out with the engine retard with the smt6, im not sure how to lay it out on the smt6, like at wich rpms should i start retarding and stuff..Comment

Well if you have a MAP sensor for the SMT then you can have boost dependent retard,,
very easy to set up, no changes to the map only need to input changes in the boost map
= Ign AMP map, then if you need a little more retard for the same boost at a specific RPM then you just add that to the RPM x Throttle MAPGunni

Skat, a turbo savy friend recomended that i not pull any timing up to around 5 grand, I did so and then retarded 1 degree at 5100 to around 5500 then 2 degrees from there till redline. It pulls very hard at 6 PSI with 19 pound injectors and no intercooler.
I can send you my ignition/fuel maps if you want Skat. Let me know!

there are a lot of cars running turbos without knock sensors. not a big deal.
with high compression you have a better off-boost engine as mentioned earlier. you just can't boost as high (probably keep it around 5 to 7 psi unless you tune it really well), and you need to be more careful with your tuning, as well as choosing a good intercooler.
I'd love to see a turbo m42. it would be a lot easier and cheaper to turbo a 4ganger than pulling off turboing an m20.
when turboing 1.8 liters, you have the advantage of being able to use a junkyard turbo like an eclipse gsx t-25 turbo, or (i believe) one of the older t-3 chrysler ones.
you might be able to pull a volvo or eclipse intercooler, or maybe a starion (if you are lucky)
i don't know how the stock manifold of the m42 is shaped. you might be able to make a thick (as in 3/4 inch) steel adapter plate and bolt the turbo right to that, like a lot of homemadeturbo.com honda guys do. or you can weld up a log-style manifold for cheap. routing your charge pipes would probably be easy with more space in the engine bay than the m20'ers.
if you do your research and do the work yourself, you could pull it off for really cheap.
the only really complicated part would be fuel and spark management, but apparently the smt-6 is good for that.

a turbo m42 would be fairly expensive to produce, and would probably only make about as much power as a m50...
dont get me wrong, i think it would be cute, but a 1.8 with a snail will still be gutless coming out of corners unless you use a baby turbo that runs out of breath early.BEERTECH

If you like the idea of a turbo 4 in the E30, check out the SR20DET or 4g43 swaps. The SR can make 500hp+, and the 4g43 much the same. Of course, you'd have rice under the hood. And if you blow up the motor: fried rice. Regardless, both would be powerful, and both are sweet motors, no matter what country they came from.Comment
