e34 tranny question.... pops outta 2nd

and we don't THINK it's the synchros. here's the scenario:

obviously from a stop, ya put it in 1st, let out the clutch, accelerate. Shift to second, feel it go in, let out the clutch & you can feel the shift linkage "shimmy" ever so slightly. stay on the gas & it stays in... let OFF the gas & POP... comes right out to neutral.

it will also pop out if you're coasting in neutral, put it into 2nd and let out the clutch w/o getting on the gas again.

i think he said something about hearing a "twang" from the shifter linkage area when it started doing it

any thoughts? something wrong w/ the linkage hopfully?

My friend's mom's e34 525i does the exact same thing. Pops out of 2nd gear all the time. It seems to be a recurring problem on the e34s from what I have seen. Sorry I can't be of any help.

It's a little spring behind a bolt on the side of the tranny.

If it's the thing I'm thinking of I'd say so. I started to tear apart my 85 318i tranny after it stuck into first gear, and remeber pulling off a bolt on the side with a large spring going into the cae by the shilt linkage which i think was this part.

That's the spring on my 85 318i 5 speed tranny, when I push it in I hear the gear shift clicking sound. On my m20 tranny the spring looks to be in the same spot but held in place with a large hew bolt. I'd double check though before pulling off bolts.

Could be the spring, but usually what you said about the trasition from on-->off the gas is what will make a bad syncro pop out of gear. May as well try the spring first though, it's a lot cheaper and easier.
