Not sure if this is going to help anyone... but after replacing all of my gears (VDO cluster) and putting back in the car the odo and tripmeter still didn't work. Sooooo I opened it back up. Of course tested that all the gears were seated and turning smoothly. Then I pulled the pinion gear (little 12 toothed one) and pulled the magnet with the rod out to inspect that. There are 2 round magnets attached to that rod... a large one and one that fits inside that one. My inner one would just come out of the larger one. Not sure if it's supposed to do that and it looked like there was once glue that held it in place on the rod. So I put a dab of super glue on that rod and glued the smaller magnet solidly into place. I also lubed the larger magnet that fits inside the housing (don't know if that helped) just for sh*ts and giggles. Now everything works peachy.

Can someone confirm if that little magnet is supposed to be fixed onto the rod or if it is supposed to come out? Mine is now fixed to the rod and working fine so... can't hurt to check that guys.
