i was just wondering how much torqe you should put on the bolts that hold the flex disc in.

    Thanks

I tighten them as hard as I physically can. I've had a bunch come loose if I don't (I've removed/replaced them probably 15 times in various e30's). You should be using new ones as well.

+1 I've used my 3/8 impact as well. I recommend using thread locker as well.

I think that the book says 80 FT.LBS. I tighten them down very tight like the above posters do.

Yeah, i got all new bolts and lockers because i had one come clean off and others that just became loose so i was getting a vibration....

well the reason i ask this is because i didnt think i was tightening them enough but as i was using all of my energy to get them tight...the damn thing twisted (the rubber) so i guess maybe it was a bad one?

i got a new one and i really dont want to take off the exhaust...i think it will just slide right out if i loosen all 6 bolts wont it?

Yes, the flex disk should slid off when you get all of the bolts out. You need to tighten it on the metal sides. So on the 3 drive shaft ears and the three trans output ears. Only tighten on them, so hold the nut/bolt on the rubber side and tighten on the metal sides. Also, there is an arrow on the flex disk. This arrow faces into the trans.

              alright, that would make sence...

so should i try to use a torque wrench or will that be almost imposible for the 3 tranny ears becuase i know for a fact i cant even get a socket on that trans side. But the other ones i should be fine with using a torque right? and i guess the book says 80 huh? its kinda hard to get in there with out using a attachment that bends...(cant remember the name... V somthin, lol) and im not sure if that works so well...

but thanks for all your help man

The flex disk will not come out with the method you are planning. The driveshaft has a "nose" that slides over the transmission output flange, the flex disk surrounds this. So you need to remove the driveshaft. I'm not sure if loosening the center nut and compressing the shaft will give you enough clearance. If you still have the heat shields, you might as well just remove the exhaust, it will probably be faster.

I use Nylocks to avoid nuts to get loose. I also torque the bolts to 90ft.lbs.
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

The exact torque spec depends on the grade and diameter of the bolt. A class 10.9 should be torqued to around 80 ft lb. Bentley has the numbers.

The correct nuts have a deformed locking collar which is meant to be used once. There is no need for thread locker if you buy the the right nuts.

Only a moron would use an impact wrench. Good way to stretch the bolt, damage the nut, crush the disc, etc.

Whatever you say. That's what range settings on the wrench are for. And my little impact that I can get in there, can do about 75 ft/lbs. So I guess, if that'll stretch out bolts or damage the BOLT then so be it.

An impact will stretch and deform (damage) the bolt because it uses intense impacts to tighten/loosen, not the gentle motion of your arm.
