    86 eta check engine light

Hey guys I was wondering if 86's came with a check engine light as my car is running poorly and I can't seem to find the wiring for the check engine light in order to be able to check the codes. I double checked the wiring on the cluster of an 89 and my 86 doesn't seem to have wiring in the same place.

If there is no check engine light is there any way to check the codes a different way? Thanks

From what I understand from my buddy on e30's with check engine lights you are able to tap the clutch with the key in the on position and the light flashes. Is there any kind of test I can do like that on my 86? Dont know if it makes a difference but I have a b25 in it and a 173 ecu.

My problem is that I thought that my car was recieving to much gas because it reaks of gas and sometimes will stall out at lights. But when I hooked up an air/fuel gauge it said that my car was running lean. My friend feels that it might be my 02 sensor as it took a long time to get a respnse from the a/f gauge.

Any thoughts for either question?? Thanks a lot

'86 eta doesn't have a check engine light, but if you have an I motor with a 173 you can turn the key on and fully extend the gas pedal 5 times to get the codes.

Nope. You'd have to see the flashes... unless you can find the pin-out for the light and put a multimeter on it. Then you can count the voltage spikes that would be activating the light.

I'd check fro vacuum leaks. Check the rubber "J" boot connecting the airbox to the throttle body. They get cracks between the ripples all the time.

My last elbow was leaking so I replaced it with a hard line but I have a feeling it still leaks slightly from were some of the rubber hoses run into it despite the silicon. I am planning on get a new elow from BMW. I just have to work up the will to buy a $50 hose and heat/ strech it to fit the m30 maf.

Do you think it could possibly just be that causing my problems?

I doubt that the elbow would be causing your car to run rich. Does your car feel like it shakes pretty bad at idle?

Have you pulled and checked all of your plugs?

I had similiar problems with my eta when I first got it running, turned out that the injector for cylinder number 6 was stuck open causing misfire and running very rich.

Also, pmed you regarding the b25 swap.

You have an M30 MAF? There's your problem, probably. That's a sketchy upgrade, alot of people have problems (although a lot don't).

Motronic 1.0 (all eta's) do not have a CEL. Motronic 1.1 does, and the motronic 1.3 has a much better system. No matter which Motronic you put in, the wiring is not present from the body side harness on a motronic 1.0 vehicle, so there's nothing causing your CEL light to flash.

                          Hey JGood

I used a 173 ecu which I believe is motronic 1.3 but im not 100% sure. The only reason I went m30 MAF was because during the swap I decided to go with 19lb injectors and the stock m20 afm. After I got the car running it would idle like shit and stall at almost every light. So I decided to see if the m30 maf would help cure the problem. It did but not 100% as the car still stalls out. Im have always wondered if removing the 19lb injectors/m30 maf would cure the problem. But do you think my problem could be a faulty 02 sensor?

Thanks a lot for the help.

yes it could be , not to mention i've heard say 19lb'ers
will run hella rich. so , i have no experience with the maf and the injectors but my car was running poorly like that , stalling ang running extremely rich , i simply unplugged the 02 sensor and problem fixed. ill replace it when i get to it .

Have you ever messed with the wheel on your M30 AFM? When I installed mine along with my M50 injectors, the car ran like crap. A bit of driving and adjusting and it runs amazingly now!
