Found this when I removed my cylinder head...

What the fuck happened here, and is this head still good?

The car ran fine, there were no problems. The buyer has already paid me for this, what should I do?

    detonation?

I've seen pinging/knocking causing dents but usually they are segregated to the fire rings where the metals edges are not supported as well.

Since we have a before pic get some of that Sea Foam and run it through the engine and then take AFTER pics. :D
    Im now E30less.

That's not detonation!! That's something went into you intake and bounced around for quite some time before being ground up and spit out. What does that bore or piston look like?

Don't bother bolting that head back on anything. It's not worth welding the head up and then grinding it back to smooth surface, unless it's a mega-flowed, ie ported polished and proven that it makes good numbers head.

Now it's a 42 lbs aluminium boat anchor.

Something definitely got in there, but its odd how it only repeatedly impacted a small area of the combustion chamber.

            How does the piston look?

I was told by Jordan that I can dremel off the high and rough spots, and smooth them out, and it will still function just fine. It showed no signs of and compression loss or any other problems while it was on the car, and I drove the car around the block a few times before dismantling it, and also would start the car and let it run for about 15 minutes everyday. I also had a BMW mechanic that is a friend of my father-in-law's look at it, and he told me the same. It should be fine.

i'd take some cash off the price and still sell it. when i pulled my head i found something like that... not quite as bad, however. as long as the piston and cylinder bore are legit, you're cool.

That head sorry is going to be a future source of problems. If you dont get all the peaks ground smooth, each one will be a new source for detonation issues. High spot gets hot the glows the pre-ignites fuel. Bad thing there. Grind it down at slow speed as not to heat the head up to bad.

I think you should give the buyer back their money.. Be straight up and come clean with them on what you found and ask them what they want to do.
If I paid you good money and got that, I'd tie a rope to that, go to your house and throw it through every single window I could find, pull it out with with the rope and throw in the next window. I'd take a nice dump on your lawn too.

I emailed the buyer wtih a pic and a detailed explanation. I also offered to refund hom 100 of the price he paid for the head. We'll see what he has to say.

We should be able to get it looking just fine. My brother-in-law is an aspiring engineer, and is very good at machine work and things of this sort. He will be able to take care of it.
The only thing that really bums me out is not so much the money, but if I had know about that stuff, I would have informed buyers, and offered a lower price.

Never new it was for sale. I just went through this kind of head work with a one of kind Oettinger 16 head for a old solid lifter 1.8l block so it was worth the money to get it welded up and the refinished.
