Best way to remove all this deadener?

I've started attacking it a bit with chisels/screwdrivers etc, but it's pretty tough shit.

Would a heat gun free it up a bit? Then some xylene or something to clean it up?

It'll all the painted over with lizardskin eventually, so i want it to be smooth as.

I removed mine a while ago without too much trouble. I used a heat gun and scraper. Another option is putting dry ice on it, let it sit for a could minutes then move the ice and hit it with a hammer. Supposedly the stuff just shatters apart if you do this.

I removed that stuff from my track rat with an air chisel. That's a fast way to do it, but it runs the risk of damage to the sheet metal if you aren't careful. A safer, if slower and messier, way is to use a heat gun. Once the sound deadening is out mineral spirits will remove the residue.

Air chisel sounds a bit brutal :p The dry ice idea is cool too (pun lol) I'll go out and buy a heat gun tomorrow and see how it goes.

        Thanks

dry ice really works, just put it on, let it freeze, then remove with chisel and hammer.

Apparently, if you pick up your E30 with a forklift, that shit just shatters.

Of course the floor is not too nice after that, but yeah.

Oh it is, but golly its fast. I took all of that stuff out (cabin & trunk) in a couple of hours. There were a couple of places where I got carried away and did minor sheet metal damage, but those were easy to fix. A couple of hits with the MIG and a bit of metal filled body filler made them disappear.

i wouldnt get ride of it if you are planning on snow use...because i noticed every place bmw put it , is where the early models seemed to rust....and i noticed even at junk yards the ones with the dead shit in it dont have floor rust....

                      but thats my opinion

dry ice is the best method by far...get a big block of it...break it up into pieces and scatter it on your floor, let it chill for awhile then clear a space away and go to town with a hammer and chisel...it popped right off in my rx7 when i did it...havent done this to my e30 yet but it should be the same. by far the easiest CLEANEST way...the heatgun method makes a sticky mess

I did the heatgun method on an E46 M3, and the heatgun+100 degree heat = big suck. you have to go to town with the mineral sprits afterwards, but it's not hard, took me about 6-8 hours to go from full deadening to clean as a whistle.

Dry ice is too hard to get here unfortunately, so i'm going out to buy a heat gun now.

I'll pass on the forklift idea... :)
