    eeeeek smoking exhuast

I just put a "new" m20b25 in my 87 325is ordered from the forums. Started it, and it is spewing out loads of white smoke. The smoke has a very odd smell. It doesn't smell like gas or normal car exhuast.

The car itself hasn't driven in over 5 years. It's expensive to dispose of bad gas properly where I live ($150+ for 10 gallons). It had 1/3 tank in it, so I filled it up to dilute the bad gas and replaced the fuel filter.

I've heard white smoke can only be caused by water/coolant getting into the cylinders (cracked block/bad headgasket). But, could bad gas be causing this smoke? TIA.

If it's coolant the smoke will taste sweet. And if it is bad gas, you'll tell by the smell.

That's exactly the smell. Now just hoping it's not a combination of both.

Drain the gas from the tank, refil with fresh and see if the smoke disappears. I'd hazard a guess that it won't and that there's a bad head gasket, or possibly a cracked head.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Any advice on what to do with the old gas? It's a full tank...so ~15 gallons.

I do the same thing with the oil out of the car.

I have a little bit of white/light smoke coming out of my exhaust, but only at startup. It only lasts until the engine warms up. My mechanic says it could be my valve stem seals. That might help you out.

yeah...I live in the burbs...that wouldn't fly. I might just empty it into some big container and put a gallon in every tank for a while.

Just drive it to get the old gas out. Take a good long 100 mile drive and then refill what you used. Should be good then.
