So it appears that either fuel pump is dying. I have been having a hell of a time finding a used M42 fuel pump, and M20 fuel pumps don't work. Now, what I want to know, is if its possible to use the early m20 "booster" pump (that sits near the fuel filter) and wire it up parallel to the in tank (or seperate relay, doesn't matter really). Will there be any repercussions to this? I have two full early m20 pump setups, so I'd rather use what I have if I'm going to be hacking shit together. Remember that this is just a beater, so I want it to run and that's it.

BEATER. Do you understand? BEATER.
Go and price a new 318is fuel pump. Its almost $300 by the time I get it shipped. 325i pump is only $150 on the other hand. So yeah, I'm not dumping $300 into a $200 car....Comment

The car runs, it just starves for fuel occasionally.
BTW, any experience with a $50 fuel pump? I'm thinking the external one will work better.Comment

When does it starve? I had this problem on a 318is and it turned out that the filter on the bottom of the pump assembly had fallen off into the tank. Under hard corners the intank pump would flop around and cause it to starve.

Straight line, usually AFTER doing some hard acceleration, but not necessarily. It's mostly random.Comment

Another option to consider is an aftermarket pump. You can buy just the actual pump, which comes with a new filter sock, and swap it out with your own into the existing assembly. All you need do is solder 2 wires. Its easy and I've done quite a few.Tenured Automotive Service Professional - Avid BMW Enthusiast

Hmmm. Details on the process? I have a 325i late model pump, so I can swap the pump over. I was looking at the top cap, that seems like it compresses, but I did not want to break anything. What's the proper process for dismantling the pump?Comment
