Little tip on the screw driver trick. Take out your trusty drill an put a hole in to drain out the oil, If you are really smart you will drill all the way through so the air can get in at the top. Also put the screw driver in as close the the stub as you dare for better results.

As for getting what remains off the adapter, try putting the filter part in the vice an pinch it till it pulls away from the mating surface of the adapter. The vice jaws should just barely clear the mating surface of the adapter. then when you have something to grab hold of use some vice grips to bend the "new" tabs down a bit till perpendicular to the adapter mating surface. Replace in the vice an put a good grip on the "new" tabs an twist on the adapter housing, if it wont go by hand try various tools you have on hand, (I like chain wrenches for this).

Option 2 if you have have a better equipped shop, is to put the adapter housing in a chain vice (wraped in a rag or 2) till it wont move, then use a pipe wrench to remove the remains of the filter.

    Just a couple of ideas

Man, my oil filter is stuck too. It's on the ground with a bunch of other parts, and I just though "eh I'll put a screwdrive to it tomorrow". Now you've got me all worried.

That just sucks! Maybe now that the housing is out, you can clamp that in a vice and use some tools to get the filter base unscrewed. A hammer and screwdriver would probably work it loose.

Take a Dremel to the base of the filter, ei the hard part, and split it radially. You should be able to then insert a chisel tip and spin it out or better yet crak it open. You have the rubber oring as a buffer between the filter housing and the oil filter fitting so just go slow and keep an eye on the depth of the Dremel cut.

Do this in two locations if the first on doesnt work. I have used these method on stubborn bearings that wouldn't budge out, ei frozen to the stub axles and hub housings...

Just be carefull with all that sharp shred metal. AND flush/wash the hexk out of the fitting when done.

Downside is the million things I did to it, I put some gouges in the metal. Sorry for the crappy picture, I was on my way to a new years party when I took it and was trying to rush.

Doesn't look to bad, but hopefully I can have that surface machined flat to make me feel better. Luke gave me a spare with all the seals rebuilt so in the interest of moving the car out of the driveway, I'm going to put his in the car, have mine machined and rebuild it with all the gaskets before giving mine to Luke.

I saw that when I bought the car, but no leaks, and I'm not planning on keeping this engine / tranny long term anyways. I thought it was real welding and someone built up the metal. Dunno how to test that, but you may be right, might just be a handful of jb weld.

                    Did I read that right....

You want to have your damaged oil filer/cooling housing machined to repair the gouge you put in it with the cutting disks? For a $35 used part....

I owe luke a filter housing, and I'm going to give him one in as nice of shape as he gave me. Machine shop will have it done for $25, picking up on Friday. So yes, it's a small price to pay to take care of someone who helped me in a pinch.

See how silly this fucker is? I told him we can file it flat enough...or just throw the thing away since I have spares, or whatever. I certainly am not worried about it, Josh is just like that.

Besides that, he makes more money than god, has to rent a second house just to hide it all from his girlfriend.

                        Thanks again, dewd.

Ahhh the stuff good memories are made of.

I remember i almos went crazy when i was replacing my steering rack, the sucker would not come off the column. Once i made it come off, all while laughing frantically, i realized that i had to take the bolts compleatly off the clamps for the rack to easily slide of the column.

Ahhh, yea good memories under the car...
