you could have mold in the a/c "box". dodge used to have a big prob with this because people used to use the a/c with it always on recirc and it would collect moisture and grow mold. just an idea to throw out.

BTW i'm pretty sure that bosch/hella makes a retrofit hepa filter for german cars IIRC. i bought one for my jetta from neuspeed of autotech, but they made them for just about everything.

That carboard stuff and foam insulating stuff on my '88 was moldy as ever. I ripped it all out replaced what I could. Then used a mix of bleach and water on a sprayer bottle to clean the metal and the foam underside of the carpets and seats. Took a good afternoon to take care of it all.

For it being in the vents and the air box, I have no clue how you can get to those without removing them.

Maybe you can search for a commercial clearner that you could recirculate through the vents that would kill the stuff? Maybe something you can place by the intake in the cabin or by the blower motor to have it circulate through the vents. Myabe run the heater full blast for a long time and dry/kill the suckers out with hot air?

NO your car does NOT have a cabin filter.
The big empty spot above #11 is where the heater core goes.
