crankshaft position sensor install - how to?

How do I install this? It's shot on my car and the shop is quoting me $400 for parts and labor... trying to see if it's worth the time/money or not.

it's not the CPS. It's the reference sensor somewhere back near the bellhousing. If it was the CPS that would be an entirely different story.

i dont understand what you were getting at with the CPS being a PITA... its at the front of the engine out in the open. Hit up a junk yard and 5-finger-discount the bitch

The crank position sensor on an eta is in the bell housing next to the speed sensor. Still, it's not really hard to change, just make sure you don't switch the speed and crank sensor leads.

The CPS is not the problem. However on early eta cars (84 85 and some of 86 I believe), the CPS and crank ref sensor are located next to each other on the bellhousing... it's not like the sensor you see on a newer e30 that's located near the front of the engine.

This is correct. ^ The sensor on the front is a pulse sensor and you see it on I motors.

All crank position sensors are pulse sensors.

Not a hard job to do...However it can be tricky to diagnose.

If a dead eta car rolled into my shop, with a bad ckp or speed ref sensor it is probable that the bill would be 2.5 hours diag. and R&R + parts ...about 400 bucks.
