How does this hose clamp work?

So I'm doing the timing belt and all the stuff that's recommended while I'm in there. Every last little thing on my new E30 is completely different from the Fords and Chevys I've been messing around with all my life, and I'm not smart enough to "just know" by looking at it.

So, how does this hose clamp work? (radiator overflow line)

looks like a one time clamp. from my experience when you actually get it removed you get a new one and the crimper for it, or you put on a regular band clamp.

Thanks - I'll grab a normal clamp for it.

In my experience you'll wanna keep spares. And try to avoid the cheap HW store clamps if you can.

They're called Oetiker Clamps. They use a special crimping plier. Also used on CV joint boots and where there are clearance and rotational weight problems. Small sizes are available from a Sea-Doo dealer and online at: http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/c...Oetiker_Clamps

just make sure the clamps you put on are the "german type". if you look at the edges of the clamps they are angled up a little bit so when you tighten them down they don't cut into the hose like the "american type" you will find at most check/autozone/pep boys/craigen. try to find a parts store that specializes in import cars to get them from.

They are reusable, use a screwdriver and twist the crimped area apart. Then when you reinstall use the tool ($55 from snap-on/Mac/ect.) or use dikes (cheap)

Good info, but $55 will buy a lot of new hose clamps! :(

Get one of these at a pawnshop for $1 and file down the edges so it won't cut the clamps.

Call me cheap, call it r3v whatever, but I get all my hose clamps from the junkyard. Audi, volvo, saab they all use good hoseclamps and you can get as many as will fit in your pocket in various sizes for a nominal $2 entry fee. Just clean them with a little wd and they're as good as new.

I might go the modified cutoff tool route posted above, but I was curious to see the tool in the Snap On catalog but I could not find it. Do you know the part number?
