    On my 318ic how do you adjust or check valve clearance

    Edit: At least, I think you don't. I'm sure its the same as the M20...

        M42s have hydraulic self adjusting lifters. you don't adjust them.

        if you're hearing ticking noises, your tensioner is probably on it's way out, and most of the rest of the timing chain assembly is getting worn too. replacing the tensioner and running a thicker oil will help.

          the funny thing is it will only tick when it is cold about 5 mins if that it goes away

            it takes a while for the pressure to build up enough for proper tension on the chain and lifters. you can try replacing the tensioner, but honestly high-mileage M42s are going to sound like that. I'd just let it warm up in the morning.
