Anyone know what this part is

Think this might be causing the high idle condition in the car. 4 hoses running into it.

    2 coolant in-out
    2 air manifold in-out

Went to look for one, but after looking over a few early cars in yards came to the conclusion they are not on US cars

Early style warm up regulator is what it appears to be. Additional air slide valve. Sounds like that is hung up hence the high idle. Maybe it's frozen with moisture in it?

Oh wow, one of those things.... Old school ICV. Works similar to a coolant thermostat.

Coolant hoses getting nice and hot?

checked around and the cheapest this part can be had is $173 plus shipping OUCH! Found a couple of hoses that had coolant/water leaking. Might be the prob. Looking at it, I'm thinking it might be able to be bypassed. What do you guys think?

Well, kinda. I've bypassed them before (non-BMW) but the car in question needed to be manually kept at a high idle for a minute or two for the first start of the day. You bypass (well, plug off) the air, not the coolant. If you simply bypass the coolant, it thinks its cold all of the time and it idles high all of the time.

will remove and clean it out this afternoon. Couple people on bimmersport.co.nz suggested it.

Dave air part works fine. Opens as temp rises and closes as it cools down(according to the kids on bimmersport). Coolant pipes should be a straight through feed right? Mine are blocked with some type of crud :(

Ouch indeed, that's BMW NA retail pricing. You should be able to get it fro 20% off if you really do need it, at least I can offer it to you for that.

Good luck, hopefully you can dump the thing!

                              Cheers.
