It's time to remove the a/c system from my parts car. Is it safe to just open one of the fittings and let all the freon out? Where would a good place to start be?

I believe you need to get it evacuated with a vacuum aparatus. R12 is some nasty stuff. I believe most shops will actually give you money for any R12 they take out because you can't really get it anymore.Originally posted by Grueliusand i do not know what bugg brakes are. -

TJ... don't tell anyone. do it outside. as per Jordans response when i asked this 6 months ago, use leather gloves and a screwdriver... unscrew the cap, use the screwdriver to depress the needle in the middle of the valve. i was also a weenie and wore a respirator.. not sure if it would have helped in the slightest. my system had almost no R12 in it.
for the record, damn everyone who does this on a car that drives. take it to the service station.. if the car doesn't drive, eh... do it at your own risk/guilt level.
edit:
oh, and remember that stuff will be dripping out of the A/C compressor for a long time... I'm assuming this is R12 and not just water. let it drain for a while before shipping... the LAST thing you need is UPS on your ass about shipping hazmats.. trust me.. not a good placesigpic
king of bad decisions.Comment

What should I use to plug the wholes in the condensor, compressor, etc., when I pull them out? So I don't get moisture or anything in side them. I can't think of anything good to use to plug the holes up.Comment

you can use hose plugs, you see them at any auto parts store, almost look like bottle caps made of fimsly plastic....wreckers use them alot, maybe ask them for some.Comment
