    Any A/C gurus here ?

I am just trying to confirm what components are shared between r12 and r134a systems? If I am putting together an a/c system and I want it to work properly what components are more or less "universal" and what parts am I better off buying new ?

I am thinking all of the piping/lines can be used, condensor also is probably the same between the different years/models ? Is the evaporator different between different models/years like the a/c compressor ?

I plan on buying all new o-rings / fittings and dryer to start with. I spoke with a local bmw dealer and was told they can't even sell me any r12 components, everything is r134a ? If that's true, then I need to make sure that all of my components or hardware I pick and install is going to work together before I take it to an a/c shop to charge.

This is going to be fun heh

IIRC you need a new expansion valve and a new receiver/dryer. I think everything else might have to be flushed. It has been a while since I dealt with this. there is a 134 conversion kit for e30's, do a search on that, and that might point you in the right direction.

Retrofit kit is mostly o-rings and seals.

Does that mean everything else (core a/c components) is 'universal' ?

That sounds about right from what I remember. I know my compressor is the same since I had R12. Like I said I think flushing is key too. I'm not a guru though. If you do end up taking it somewhere i know a good guy on Sunrise.

For what it's worth, I converted from R-12 to R-134 and wasn't too impressed. The e30 condensor is too small to effectively handle the 134. Some may feel different.

Long story short, I went with Duracool and was very happy with it.

Benefits are 1) very efficient and won't slow the car down when the compressor kicks in 2) compatible with mineral oil and not as susceptible to moisture. 3) Cold!

Drawback is that your car can never again have the A/c professionally serviced (it will contaminate their machines)

Also, stick with the R-12 if you can.

          Do some research on it.
