When I start my car *'85 eta* my CEL flashes at me, until I hit the Check Button on the ceiling, and it stops flashing.

Does everyones car do this? or does this mean I'm running a code??

it's not a check engine light

does it go away when you hit the brakes?

yes, the "brake check" light (top left corner) goes away once I hit the brakes-

I mean the orange "CHECK" light that flashes the instant you fire up the engine, goes away once I push the "check" button, on the panel

it's normal, it's testing the brake light circuit. you don't need to hit the check panel, because it's looking for you to tap the brakes.
