    engine block painting....

I've never painted a engine block before - how the heck to I get rid of rust and paint the sucker?

I'd love to be left with a thick looking coat of glossy paint- almost like a thick power coat - looking finish....

    Any advice?

Wipe it down with a rag to get the loose stuff off and paint it. It should turn out.

look at the block - that rust has etched it's way into the block...wipe it with a rag?

Dam - I was thinking of getting a brass or steel brush and scrubb it - or a circular brush mounted in a rotary air tool...

      a rag? are you high?

I dont think you will ever be able to get a "smooth" finish. Just make sure all of the loose stuff is off and then shoot it.

Get some wire brushes and remove as much as you can. Then get some Naval Jelly Rust Dissolver (Thick pink liquid you can get from Home Depot for $5 or so). Apply it generouly to the block and let the phosphoric acid dissolve the rust. Then spray it all off.

Nod on the navel jelly. I used it to remove a few spots I had on my car so they could not come back. A wire brush will help.

I plan on starting to paint my block tommorow, I painted an m20 before and just got all the grime off then lightly sanded it to remove most of the rust and painted it.
I just got my lower gasket set in the mail and my Oil pump, and some other parts are supposed to be here soon.
I Plan on painting the block with some high temp black paint I used on a set of I exhuast manifolds that looked awsome when finished.

I used a high temp gloss black but before I did that I used a high strength degreaser and a light acid it removed every thing with out hardly any scrubbing.

You can hide pox well with a black paint but if you want to do something else a little wet sand and soap then blow it dry with a compresser then straight to paint.

I just got done cleaning my block. It turned out great. I stoped by Walmart and got a couple cans of Engine Degressor, Sprayed it on and went to work scrubbing with a steel wire brush. After 3-4 treatments and rinses the block is clean to the touch. All the loose rest is gone, along with the grime, and some of the origanl paint on the block. Once I get the Crank nut off, and the timing cover off I'll clean it one more time and then paint it.

Tried navel jelly on a flywheel last night - let it sit for 5 mins - hosed it off - didn't really do anything...how long did you guys let it sit?

At least 4 times that long. And you'll probably have to do it 2-3 times to get it all off depending on how much rust there is. Use a wire brush to get most of it off first.

Ok here are some pics of my cleaning.

I see now how the older and newer M30 mounts differ.

maybe invest in a sandblaster ($12 at homedepot)...well that is if you already have a compressor handy
