how to spot a bad steering rack?

i was told my steering rack was bad. it's got no belt on it, and i tried to put some atf fluid in just for kicks and it stayed in for the duration of a 30 minute drive (obviously no ps without belt) and when i turned off the car, the fluid all came pooring out of the steering rack boots... so, is my rack bad? should i hook up a belt and try again? thanks

No, sounds like the outer shaft seals are gone, you could pull it and rebulid, or contact LPD in Duarte. You should be able to source a used unit, talk to David.

Be prepared for a little more work that way, but, someome here was selling a PnP e36 swap.

hmm the diy writeup seemed like its not too difficult, i've got the tools. how hard is it to replace the outer seals? my dad works at a dealer so i can get the parts for cheap

            Agreed.

OP, what are your intentions for the car?

If the vehicle is to remain as a nice, daily driven E30, then I would suggest just picking up a good condition, used E30 rack as they can be had for quite reasonable prices.
