A familiar phrase from my childhood comes to mind... "Toy may require some assembly."

What a friggin' mess of random parts. Gonna try and put some of it together this weekend. It came with 12 ignition coils and part of a door handle, so who knows if I'm missing pieces.

you sure aobut doing the m54? this is complicated, you have the EWS worked out? all the crappy OBD2 stuff as well.

y does it have 12 ignition coils? that may mean some are bad.

good luck if it all works out you will have a very high and flat torqu plateau.

I really just purchased this for the block. I have a partially complete (but all high performance) S50 head that I will put on it to keep it OBD I.

About the manifold, the part number is 11 61 1 438 140, I haven't had time to look it up yet, I'm at work. So if someone wants to look up what engine it is from, that'd be cool. All I know is it's different from the number I looked up on a random month '99 Z3 2.8 L.

I have been told by many that only the double vanos m52 head will work on an m54. If you can get the s50 head to work I am gonna be pissed off, because the guy I bought the m50 from had an m54 sitting there and I was so wantign it instead!!!!!!!!

Stu said it would work, I figure he's the authority around here on that stuff.

I seem to see what trent sees. Double vanos head and the intake appears to be M54. The aluminum block sure looks nice.

I'd say 52 pounds is pretty significant, ditch the AC, and that's a pretty significant amount of weight off of the front end of the car. The 2.8 is a square motor, and you can still get some pretty significant gains from a set of M3 cams and an OBDI conversion.

That mess of parts looks scary though BTW, did they not put any sort of packing material around it either?

                        I never said that a '95 M3 head will bolt onto an M54. The M52 Z3 2.8 alloy block WILL bolt up to a '95 M3 head.

Who says the M52 aluminum block cannot be enlarged? Any crank will work and the bore size can be increased slightly as well.

Cannot rember who told me the alloy block cannot be bored, but I guess you could use the 3.2 crank and rods producing about a 3.0 so that would be good.

My car is a daily drive, I would love to drop the weight, but I live in 80 and 90 degree weather here in Georgia!

Aren't the aluminum M54 and M52 blocks the same? I read on the BMWCCA page that it was unchanged.

A couple paragraphs after the first picture.

EDIT: Hang on a second. Did the M54 even come in a 2.8 L? The guy I bought it from said this was a '99 Z3 2.8 L. Man I can't wait to get home and start running part numbers through ETK to see if I got f*cked.

Your a brave man, what would worry me is why would anyone disassemble an engine to that degree.
