Extrude Hone

Anyone know anyone who has gotten cylinder heads/intake manifolds extrude honed?
Anyone know how much power you can get out of doing such things? I did a search and came up bunk.

My intake manifold is extrude honed. It pulls harder near the rev limiter, and I don't notice a low-end torque loss, but I don't have dyno data except the charts on Dinan's site (http://www.dinancars.com/filepreview...3%20series.pdf) which show a pretty hefty gain in combination with a chip and exhaust: 27 hp over the previous peak. Ireland's site claims 15 hp for manifold alone. http://www.bmw2002.com

Although many say that Dinan's numbers are inflated, I've never seen independent testing prove or disprove the E30 numbers, and until data shows otherwise, people are blindly repeating a general skepticism against Dinan.

If anyone has a Dyno to use in CA or wants to start a fund, I'll volunteer my car to get tested and post the results.

BOTH of those claims are bs. You could do EVERY bolt on mod to a stock bottom end M20B25 and still not even gain 15hp. Hell, most of the strokers have a hard time breaking 200hp.

since the claims are for increase, and the original numbers are flywheel.......

and since the stroker numbers come from a chassis dyno....

and since no one has posted a 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, with high compression and a good cam......

I have an extrude hone intake manifold

I have an extrude hone intake manifold. Really no difference in performance until about 3,500rpm to 4,000 rpm. At these rpms your torque will noticeably improve. The car will start to pull much harder than with a stock manifold.

Do I regret doing it? No, I was really curious and got in on a group buy for $450. And it certainly didn't hurt my car's performance. Freeway driving is definetly more fun.

Do I recommend it? Only if you spend a lot of time at or above 4,000 rpm. Otherwise, you wont notice the difference.

Most people will tell you that if you want some serious increase in performance, to either get a turbo or do an engine swap. Both are expensive, but you'll spend just as much money modifying a stock M20 engine and max out at about 195 - 200 rwhp.

The Dinan extrude hone intake manifold ($900) is the same as the Ireland Engineering one ($610) but comes with a black powder coating. Both just take stock intake manifolds and send them to Extrude Hone to be processed. So you may want to get a pricing from Extrude Hone directly, but usually IE is cheaper. Or wait for a group buy.

Dinan posted numbers for a CAI, chip, and exhaust on a 98 530 (M52) which showed a 38hp increase at the 'rear' wheels. Rod spent the money and had the goodies installed on his 98 Dinan5 (M52). His independent dyno results showed a 14hp increase and 12ft lbs increase at the 'rear' wheels. When he questioned Dinan, they told him that his dyno results are either incorrect or his car wasn't tuned correctly (?). Basically, he feels (and rightfully so) that he paid $6,000 for a Dinan badge and a few basic upgrades. He is happy with the car, but not satisfied with Dinan. Dinan has always inflated their numbers. The have some great stuff, but their PR is pretty lame. If you carefully add up their E30M20 numbers, common sense/basic knowledge will tell you that they are full of shit. I have nothing against Dinan. They have some very nice and functional products. Their goods will always sell well. They don't have to lie about them.

Well over on the Roadfly e30 forum,

BMW332i has a 325 with all of the dinan stuff (well the ones on the graph intake manifold, chip, exhaust). He then had the car put on the dyno,. and it showed about the same gain as on the dinan graph.

Don't get me wrong. I'm definitely not an advocate for dinan as I think their products are way over-priced. But not all of the stuff is bs.
