are you sure it's not just dripping down the bellhousing? could be a leak in the headgasket at the back of the motor, and it's just dripping all the way down. could also be coming from the rear coolant pipe on the head. sometimes it's a bitch to get that one back on.. could be anything if you just did the headgasket...
Jordan's got it. The coolant can't be coming out of the bellhouse unless (maybe) your so unlucky that a freeze plug jumped out and then it wouldn't be leaking, it would be flowing.
Hmmmm since you have an early car, I believe there is a freeze plug on the block that is covered by the transmission bell housing. This was slightly leaking on my old 85 325e. Just another thing to consider.
