Help! Can't get rid of clunking noise in the rear.

I'm posting this problem again since I didn't quite get any satisfactory answers earlier. Here goes - I'm hearing intermittent clunking sounds in the rear section of my 89 325i -especially over bumps and road imperfections. I've replaced my H&R lowering springs thinking that was the culprit and installed new stock springs. However, the noise remains. What could be causing it? I've already replaced the bushings in the right-side area where the noise seems to be coming from and also tightened the battery housing and other trunk components. Guide supports are new as well. Any ideas, guys? FYI, I'm using the black type OE Bilstein shocks. It's really depressing me.

make sure your Rear Shock Mounts are tight, go pull off the lining in your trunk, 2 13mm nuts on each side...

Check everything to do with the anti sway bar in the rear (links and bushings).

Duct tape would be more effective, don't you think?

Seriously - check the shock mounts. If those are good, start looking at every bolt, bushing and connection back there. Is your exhaust secured properly? What about something loose in your trunk such as your jack?

Thanks for your suggestions. I've already done most of what you've told me to do in the past - tighten bolts, replace bushings, etc. But I'll check again and let you know.

check your exhaust donuts, or just go in the back and shake the exaust, when the donuts are shot it allows it to swing so much it hits the sheet metal

Check to make sure your spare tire is totally torqued down and not moving around.
