If you're going to drop in a 325i motor, then attach it to a Getrag 260 trans and either a 3.73 or 4.10 diff (the latter for better acceleration). Didn't you UK folks get a "sport" gearbox....something with closer ratios? Or was that just the M3?

BMW europe has an def. a sportgearbox in its E30 program
called dogleg tranny (i tought it is an Getrag 245/6 or something) with the first gear underside lef and the 5th gear is 1:1 :P

        You'll need (basicly) :
        the M20b25 engine,
        wiring harness,
        325i ECU
Getrag 260 gearbox (or the sports one)
        Driveshaft
        Big case diff.

and def. change to rear disc brakes you'll need them

btw: maybe you should talk to some M50 guys here on the board if you want bigger power

you need alot more than that, and the small case diff is fine for quite a while-- its probably a 4.10 at that too.
          radiator
          hoses
          airbox
basically everything under the hood along with driveshaft, exhaust, and like said pef. brakes

everything from your connector C101 to your engine and ECU

              correct me if i'm wrong

EDIT: and the wiring diagram from the connector wich stays in the car needs also some
modifications ( they don't line up correctly )
