E36 Window Switch kit (1touch, too!) feeler

OK guys, after much thinking and futzing around, I think I have a plan to do a serious upgrade on the E30 window switch issue.

How about the E36 (low current) style switches? These have nice LED lighting, look very nice, do not stick or behave erratically. The hole in our console is only a tiny bit too small, but precision cutting would be necessary.

I can produce a kit that is able to be 100% plug and play, only 1 wire to run into the engine compartment, and cut out your switch holes only a tiny bit...like a 2 hour job, total(!)

In addition this can also use 3 switches to do automatic up/down. 2 will do normal up/down, but the 3rd switch will roll both (coupes only at the moment) windows up or down.

This will also "vent" your windows if the temperature gets to 100 degrees in your car...only like an inch, but a tiny bit open to keep your car cool.

This will also allow window roll up/down by remote, if connected to your aftermarket keyless entry/alarm system.

As things sit, I would have 3 choices:

    1. Coupe deluxe: 3 switches, full up/down, all illuminated, alarm interface capable. Has only 1 wire to connect to main power under hood, 2 (optional) wires to the alarm. 100% plug and play, no kidding, no joke...plug and play. Approximately $225 for the entire kit.

    2. Coupe basic: Works like the stock system, but with sexy smooth switches, still 100% plug and play. I would guess about $175ish for the kit

    3. Sedan/cabriolet: 4 switches, no automatic features (could be added, but big bux) but a huge improvement over the stock switches. About $225ish...thus the one touch option would be REALLY expensive, like $500 total, maybe a bit more!

The other major benefit is that these kits would use normal relays, far better voltage/current stability than the stock 20 year old switches. I can't promise anything, but they should offer better window motor life.

What do you think, guys? Should I build these?

    thanks for the input.
    Luke

I already own two of the e36 green bottomed window switches. Is that what you're going to use?

Well, posterity, you will never know what it cost us to preserve your freedom. I only hope that you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.

Interesting, but kinda pricey for me. I picked up two new E30 window switches on eBay for a good deal recently, my driver-side down button is the only one that gives me trouble.

              So, yeah, about that price...

I assume you guys know me well enough to know I charge as little as I can get away with.

I am hoping to be able to make these with as little parts cost as possible.

For example, I am gonna use broken E30 window switches to plug into the E30 window harnesses, then use the green base E36 switches (used OE, in perfect condition) with aftermarket relays.

The expensive part is gonna be the harnesses for the E36 switches. And the one touch module, plus the extra hassle to install that into the system.

In all reality, I am hoping to be able to make these kits for about half of what I listed, it is all about the E36 plug in ends, and the dead E30 switches.

So yeah, you guys with dead E30 switches or E36 switches or e36 harnesses to clip the ends off of, let me know.

What would you guys think of me building the shit, then you attaching your own ends/switches/harnesses? How important is the one touch feature?

I plan on doing the same thing for the sunroof, too...but one touch is a bitch on that!

i would prefer a plug and play kit if possible...

the one touch doesn't bother me at all, don't need it,

prefer just having window switches that don't burn my finger tips..

how difficult would cutting the switch holes be do you think

Pretty easy if you have cutting skills?

I wasn't knocking the price, I'm sure it will be worth what you charge. My thought was just that it was more than I would want to pay for it, since my current system is working fine.

I would be interested in a coupe version in a month or so. Let me know when they become available.

I would prefer a one touch system that uses stock switches, but would be down for one with e36 switches.
I had the autolock systems for the sunroof and windows, but they used so much power that the windows wouldn't roll up without help (my hand). As long as you make something that doesnt eat power from the motors (I'm assuming not since you say it needs an external 12V), I'm down for anything with one touch.

I would be down for the one touch option but i dont want to install a third switch for it... possible to use the e36 one touch swicthes and wire them to a circuit/alarm to get them to function?

Contrary to popular opinion, the E36 low current switches are nothing special, just simple switches.

The controller does all of that.

The controller I have does NOT convert the system to one touch unless there is some other input: alarm, separate switch, something.

I wish it worked like the old AutoLoc, but no luck.
