OK guys, after much thinking and futzing around, I think I have a plan to do a serious upgrade on the E30 window switch issue.
How about the E36 (low current) style switches? These have nice LED lighting, look very nice, do not stick or behave erratically. The hole in our console is only a tiny bit too small, but precision cutting would be necessary.
I can produce a kit that is able to be 100% plug and play, only 1 wire to run into the engine compartment, and cut out your switch holes only a tiny bit...like a 2 hour job, total(!)
In addition this can also use 3 switches to do automatic up/down. 2 will do normal up/down, but the 3rd switch will roll both (coupes only at the moment) windows up or down.
This will also "vent" your windows if the temperature gets to 100 degrees in your car...only like an inch, but a tiny bit open to keep your car cool.
This will also allow window roll up/down by remote, if connected to your aftermarket keyless entry/alarm system.
As things sit, I would have 3 choices:
1. Coupe deluxe: 3 switches, full up/down, all illuminated, alarm interface capable. Has only 1 wire to connect to main power under hood, 2 (optional) wires to the alarm. 100% plug and play, no kidding, no joke...plug and play. Approximately $225 for the entire kit.
2. Coupe basic: Works like the stock system, but with sexy smooth switches, still 100% plug and play. I would guess about $175ish for the kit
3. Sedan/cabriolet: 4 switches, no automatic features (could be added, but big bux) but a huge improvement over the stock switches. About $225ish...thus the one touch option would be REALLY expensive, like $500 total, maybe a bit more!
The other major benefit is that these kits would use normal relays, far better voltage/current stability than the stock 20 year old switches. I can't promise anything, but they should offer better window motor life.
What do you think, guys? Should I build these?
thanks for the input.
Luke
