    M70B50 swap

ok first before i get flamed... im not doing this (at least not yet =))...

but say someone was to do it... what would be involved.. has anyone done a write up on it.. . i know its been done at least 4 times based on cars i have seen on the web....

    anyone have any info...

Id ask the 4 people you saw with them.

The only problem with doing it is it makes less HP than the European S50 and Its probably cheaper to drop that in. If you were going to get the 12 cylinder I would shoot for the S70B56. Its 380hp and 550ft-lbs.

Or just stick with the V8 that is only 25hp down and 30ft-lbs down from the M70.
    Im now E30less.

I know there's a website lurking out there with several pics of this very conversion. Its a black 2-door....you've probably seen it before. Anyway, the V12 is a big motor....in both size and weight. There's no question you would have abundant torque all over the revband but the added weight will really alter the handling characteristics of your car. The V8s are only marginally down on power and torque (aftermarket bits can fix that) plus its lighter and the majority of the engine's mass will be sitting further back in the engine bay, which will help keep a more balanced chassis. Its that 'ol low polar moment of enertia thing ;)

As for what would be needed for such a conversion, pretty much every system involved with the motor will be effected...

Electrical system mods will be needed

A cooling system that can cope with the additional heat of a larger capacity motor

Custom induction work may be in order

Brakes (booster modification or relocation will be necessary)....not to mention bigger discs/calipers at all corners

Exhaust system fab work (remember, two banks of cylinders = twice as much tubing)....this can be tricky on the driver's side with the steering column in the way

And in the case of the V12 some firewall modification may be required to get that lump to fit in there.

the v8 would be a great choice, the weight can be pushed back and it weighs 308 lbs versus the Euro s50 that weighs 333lbs. and the 4.4 v8 would have much more power to gain.

the v12 would be very cool.
The brake booster would be no problem if you can mount it the way it is on say the early 90s 7 series, up in front of the fender.
Cooling should not be much of a problem, you could probaly get a thicker custom radiator and an electric fan. Seems like the m30 engine would be harder to cool and my bud has no trouble with his.

Actually, the V12 is shorter than the V8 and not much longer than an M20.

Many, many junkers. Find an online database of local ones, there are lots of crashed 750's with unwanted engines.
