My car did the same thing for a while, but lucky for me it was the wire thats connected to the positive terminal on the battery, my battery slid from its place while going up a driveway and the wire ripped off, I went threw about 3 used pumps and 2 new ones, in the end i soldered that fuckin wire in place and viola.
This might not really help you b/c you have a early car, but its worth a shot. BTW I have a nice fuel pump for a 325i with like 12 miles on it if anyone needs a bargain pump.

A used pump is an iffy proposition, at best. Spring for a new pump, but before installing it, make sure that you aren't killing pumps from a build up of sediment (rust actually) in the tank.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

There is no sediment. I don't want to buy a new one until I find the problem though- $15 is easier to lose than $250.

Any more help on converting to a late model pump? I got one from FredK last night but it has no return line on it. Where does the return go on late models?

No clue on conversion, but your pumps might be dying due to a build up somewhere in the system making too much stress on the used pumps. good luck with the struggle. keep posting any new findings. i'm interested to find out the prognosis.

Yeah, I think it is the outside pump that is holding it back. I'm going to a Junkyard in Mass tomorrow to try to find both pumps, and if they die I am just gonna put in a late model tank and skip making a new line for the return.

It looks like it goes to a nipple on the driver's side of the tank in the attached drawing. #2 is the return line, #1 is the supply line.

What the hell, I looked on realoem and it showed the same pic for late models as it did for early models. I tried to trace the line in the 318, but it went up and over the tank.

If the new pump I got today doesn't work, I may need your tank as well, Fred.

My tank has a pinhole in it. I think it can be repaired, but I tried using that kneadable epoxy stuff and it started leaking again.

I finally got a working pickup pump in long enough to test the fuel flow coming out of the return. Bentley says the spec is 30oz in 30 seconds- I got 7oz.

I changed the main pump with another used one, but that one didn't work at all. I was only getting 9 volts at the main pump, is it supposed to be that low or is there something wrong with my pump wiring? I suck at electrical.
