so you have $10000 Australian which is like $7000 USD? I would either go with an s50 or you could get an m50 with some m3 cams and a few more parts.sigpicComment

M42... the E36 motors had knock sensors.Originally posted by mjc85Yeh i also heard the Downing/atlanta supercharger doesn't fit the M42 i think it requires some fabrication. I'm pretty certain it was for the M44 isn't it ?

yeah if yr worried about weight, the best bet would be an alloy block. there are a few kicking around at the moment, just need to do some research ;)
if you wanna boost. CAPA down here s/cd an m42 e36 with an Eaton blower. i think it put down 110kW @ wheels, and was pretty much neck and neck with an e36 M3. if you transferred that combo into an e30, youd be laughing. sorry, but as appealing as it sounds, the s14 is pretty much not viable.
m50, and if you want some weight loss, alloy block too.
the other way you could do it cheap down here is with a jap motor :borg: however, i do not condone such activities. ;) There is someone in BrisVegas that is doing an SR20DET conversion right now. hes on DTM, dont recall the s/n
since your up north, speak to kim at Queensland Motorsport. They race a few e30s fitted with s14s. so if you have a hardon for an s14, they are the ones to talk to. One of their cars is for sale at the moment i beleive. but ittl cost ya a left nut.

If you've got 10k to spend and you want a really unique car with a good amount of power. Consider rebuilding the M42 with new internals and revamping the head. Making it a high-revving application with standalone engine management could allow you to have a really powerful M42.
That's what I'd do anyways...Comment

Yes and be stuck with a motor with only 20 more horses, worse reliability, and not much potential.Originally posted by DigitalwaveDude, shut the fuck up.Originally posted by GreekDriverThe M50 swap is a bad idea.
The 318is is SUPPOSE to be lightweight. With that heavy pig M50, your car would suck. The V8 motor from your Holden Monaro is 100lbs lighter than the M50, more reliable, has alot more potential, has ALOT more stock power(double I think) and gets better gas mileage. You might as well swap that if you are considering putting a twin-cam BMW I-6.
You could also put in an M20 out of a E30 325i, and turbo it. There is plenty of information, and the M20 responds really well to a turbo and can take high boost. It would keep front end weight down, so your handling wouldn't be affected as much as with an M50.
There are very few forced induced 318is E30s out there. So there isnt much information. That would be a harder project. The LS1 swap, would be the hardest though.
If he has $10,000 he could do an M50 and have enough for a CF hood and fenders to make up that slight difference in weight.
The M50 is shit. Pure shit. Why would anybody bother with an M50 when an M20 that can be had for so cheap could put out ridiculous numbers with a turbo!Comment

I agree more with you GreekDriver. But the M42 still has more tuning easibility than the M20 since it's DOHC. I'd still go for the N/A route with the M42 if you've dedicated that kind of money to modifying your carComment
